It is roughly estimated that 4% of our population is suffering from some kind of ear pathology out of which majority suffer from chronic middle ear infection. In spite of significant development of training otologists, there is still a wide gap between requirement and availability of trained otologists. This perhaps is due to insufficient number of otology centers and inadequate instrumentation for diagnosing middle ear pathology. Dr Mubarak Muhamed Khan and Dr Sapna Ramkrishna Parab have painstakingly collected a large number of cases and have photographed the pathological conditions of middle ear. This monogram will help budding otologists to learn from these photographs. This atlas is a well-documented book which will help all the otologists. There are excellent illustrations of very rare conditions as well as common conditions. This work will not only help students of otology to diagnose middle ear pathology but also help them in their practice to formulate therapy for patients. This atlas should be like a Bible to all and should remain in possession of all young and old otolaryngologists during treating ear conditions.

The color Atlas reveals minute pathological lesions for understanding the ear pathology which will help in  reconstructing the otological procedures.
The Atlas of Endoscopic otology will definitely help the training residents intending for special interest in otology and also the practicing otologists. The color Atlas is comprehensive unfolding the the minute pathology of various ear diseases.
I extend my hearty congratulations to Dr. Khan and Dr,Parab for this wonderful and innovative color Atlas which will remain on the medical book stalls.

REVIEW OF OUR BOOK BY DR. MANOJ MANIKOTH

In one word- commendable! Easy to read, lucid presentation, nice formatting ( not often seen in Indian books), no clutter and quite comprehensive in coverage.
The first chapter starts very well, a concise description of the tympanic membrane anatomy and many pictures, eleven in all. However one must remark that many of these pictures are similar and wonder whether a large single page high resolution color photograph with a line diagram on the next page, clearly labeled would have been a better idea. Figures 6,8,9 and 11 look like replicas.
A comment about the quality of the endoscopic photographs- great deal of improvement is possible. The only photograph in the whole book that is of really good quality came from the Causse clinic. I think we have the technology to do as good, if not better photographic documentation. The authors are luminaries in their own right and have the passion to produce a book that is a work of love, no doubt, but why cringe on quality? A Xenon/ LED light source, high res camera like the Storz HD, good image capturing software like provision or DIVA which aren’t too expensive would have produced pictures that are stunning, given the amazing clinical material in the book.
The varieties of external ear conditions shown are quite good, and are of special relevance and these are the cases that are more specific for our conditions. Quality of photographs apart, a great collection and learning material. Kudos.
The chapter on AOM has a small glitch to begin with. The stage of resolution should have mentioned, “Most cases of AOM tend to resolve without antibiotics”. This is a documented, scientifically proven fact and needs to be highlighted.
The lighthouse sign is a video sign and can never be actually demonstrated in serial photographs.  For us who have seen this, the image is realistic, but for a GP, for whom I believe this book is a great diagnostic tool, it maybe perplexing.
The term Chronic Suppurative otitis media is too, I fear, rather archaic. The current terminology is Chronic Otitis media, mucosal or squamous type, active or inactive and should have been used throughout this book. So is the term adhesive otitis media- and is actually chronic ear disease, squamous type inactive. Is the use of decongestants recommended in Otitis media? I fear that there is a lot of evidence it does no good and in fact harm.
The various presentations of chronic ear diseases are very well documented and apart from a minor criticism of some apparently similar photographs that run the risk of repetition, are truly informative. Some technical terms like infected gel foam could have been avoided, and the lowered facial ridge do not appear lowered at all! It is probably a photographic illusion, but deserves mention.
The chapter on otitis media with effusion , ventilation tubes , granular myringitis and hemotympanum should technically have preceded the chronic ear chapters.
Though cartilage tympanoplasty is a fantastic technique and many surgeons including me use it from time to time, it is not the only option for creation of a neotympanum. A book on cartilage tympanoplasty can elaborate its advantages, not a endoscopic atlas, which could have included other grafts like temporalis fascia, perichondrium and fascia lata. Obviously a canal wall down procedure would require far more than a cartilage graft and this is not mentioned in the atlas. An audiometric follow up also would have added value to the pre and postoperative chapter.
Why has the exostosis been repeated in the tumors chapter when it already is mentioned in the external canal pages? A post treatment picture could have been included.
Just for completion, the Sade and Tos classification of retractions could have been acknowledged in a footnote as a tribute for those giants.
Notwithstanding these comments that should be taken as encouragement for improvisation rather than negative criticism, the authors deserve all praise for bringing out such a first-of-a-kind book of Otoendoscopy. You deserve a standing ovation. May god bless your passion to bring out another edition to shut big mouths like mine! Congratulations!

REVIEW OF OUR BOOK BY DR. RAVI SARDESSAI

ENDOSCOPIC COLOR ATLAS OF EAR DISEASES – A VALUE ADDITION FOR EVERY STUDENT OF ENT ; PAEDIATRICS AND FAMILY PRACTISE.

Jaypee brothers has started a very good trend of encouraging new talent in medical book publishing. Sparkling example of success of this trend is the present book. The authors; Mubarak Khan and Sapna Parab are young enthusiastic teachers from MIMER Medical college; Talegaon. Both have shown exceptional patience; hard work and maturity in creating this marvellous atlas.

The idea of using nasal endoscope and video recording facility for recording ear pathology is not new and is used by all young practitioners .But the quality of pictures in this book must come through a lot of effort on the technology front.

The authors have painstakingly covered almost all topics of diagnostic otology. Every picture is printed on high quality glossy paper , with meticulous labelling to describe all details .Where ever required ; pictures in different magnifications are provided. This gives insights into intricacies of each pathology.

There is an impressive collection of pictures of every condition. A small introduction has been provided for every topic, which precisely describes the condition .Various forms of a condition of important diseases like cholestetoma , adhesive otitis media are provided for better understanding.

Pictures of foreign bodies will make an interesting and amusing viewing (and perhaps eye openers) even for general population.

Both the authors are worthy of praise for this successful first effort .This kind of work requires a lot of support from the work place and MIMER Medical College and its dignitaries are also worthy of praise for providing it.

REVIEW OF OUR BOOK BY DR. RAJEEV YANDE

It gives me immense pleasure to write few lines as
regards your Herculean efforts towards presentation of a unique book
to the fraternity of Otolaryngologists globally. First of all let me
appreciate your dedicated attitude to put forth the concentrated
efforts which I feel is hardly possible today in view of utter
competition that everyone of us faces. It shows that you possess the
Medusa touch of academics and innovative mind supported aptly by the
effort taking capacity. The book has turned out to be an eye opener
for the undergraduate and posgraduate students world over. The
demonstrations have turned out to be words of gospel and future
additions regarding the operative background of illustrations would
create a masterpiece which shall remain a milestone in Otology.
Bettering our own efforts in succession should remain  a bold
bottomline for the years to come and I am certain, critical analysts
shall widen  successful horizons in your glittering career. I would
also want you to further the scope of the present book towards
creating a short ( Oxford type) book of Otology illustrating various
investigations ( Say, Hallpike test, Tuning fork tests etc) and the
treatment of common ailments as practised by the author in an
authoritatve way so that the book will get more acclaim. Only the
Hungry mind avails the Food of thoughts !! I am certain you will
triumph -- as ever  _--
